Atomic Box
"Pogot" Robot

Unknown, 1970s
10 inches tall

This Russian toy embodies the Soviet design aesthetic -- simple, functional, almost austere. At the same time, it pulls much from Japan's Horikawa robots, with it's boxy shapes and simple facial expression.

In action, the wind up toy walks forward while a rotating wheel causes the circular marks in the robot's tin chest to change color.

These toys come in a variety of colors and color-combinations, as well as with slightly different chest designs. Some have antennas, others don't. They appear on ebay all the time, and can often be had for under $30. Make sure to get a boxed one -- the prices are low enough that it's worth the money to get such a fine example of Soviet graphic design.
